HSBC Asset Management, the investment management business of the HSBC Group, invests on behalf of HSBC’s worldwide customer base of retail and private clients, intermediaries, corporates and institutions through both segregated accounts and pooled funds. HSBC Asset Management connects HSBC’s clients with investment opportunities around the world through an international network of offices in 23 countries and territories, delivering global capabilities with local market insight. As at 31 December 2023, HSBC Asset Management managed assets totaling US$707bn on behalf of its clients.
We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as Director, Asset Management Strategy.
Role purpose
Working within the HSBC Asset Management (AM) strategy team, the Strategy Director is a member of the AM Global Strategy Leadership team, reporting to the Global Head of Strategy for HSBC AM. The role will focus on leading Global Organic and Inorganic Strategy projects including strategic review of the product offering, design the target market and client footprint, M&A, disposals, oversight of AM joint ventures, AM legal entity optimization, and strategic planning related to seed and long-term capital investments in AM products.
The primary responsibilities are:
- Organic strategy: Development of Business or Regional strategy in line with IWPB and AM Strategic direction; manage the process of strategic reviews; develop diagnostics and action plans for strategic initiatives and underperforming business segments; and monitor or oversee strategy implementation and transformation initiatives.
- M&A and Partnerships: M&A screening, project management and governance (both acquisitions and disposals); strategic fit assessment, financial modelling, business case, due diligence, synergy & integration planning; post-merger integration reviews and execution. Ongoing oversight of Joint Ventures (JVs)
Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Leading the development of strategy plans, including articulation of ambitions, priorities, investments and plans to deliver HSBC Asset Management’s strategy.
- Leading AM strategy aspects of M&A projects including market scanning, target identification, target analysis, financial modelling, synergy planning, due diligence and project management and governance.
- Overseeing the development of competitor insight and benchmarking to identify key trends impacting the Asset Management industry and shape our strategic planning.
- Leading the development of an MI and analytics framework which helps proactively identify strategic opportunities or risks within the HSBC Asset Management business.
- Leading projects that are strategic or confidential in nature e.g. country/capability reviews.
- Providing ongoing strategic oversight on strategic or transformational projects e.g. market entry or M&A integration projects.
- Assisting with ongoing oversight and management reporting for AM JVs.
- Ensure strong collaboration with Global Business (GB), Global Functions (GF) teams to mobilise initiatives requiring cross-functional inputs.
- Engage with functional stakeholders (e.g. Human Resources, Information Technology, Finance), Product Partners and the other Global Businesses to ensure progression against plans.
Leadership & Teamwork
- A member of the AM Strategy Leadership team, responsible for leading the Hong Kong-based Asset Management Strategy team
- Excellent relationship management, resilience and influencing skills with experience of working with global stakeholders of different levels and cultures
- Strong navigator and promoter of challenging the status quo, seeking to improve ways of working and having a forward-thinking mind-set, in line with the Group’s values and strategy

- Comfortable with ambiguity, unfamiliarity and able to bring clarity to complex issues
Functional Knowledge
- Demonstrated experience in strategy and M&A, either working for an in-house strategy / corporate development team, or for a strategic consultancy / investment bank
- Strong understanding of Asset Management business including knowledge of markets, clients, capabilities and operational topics, experience in Asset Management preferred
- Financial modelling skills, strong understanding of financial accounting and excel skills
- Analytical background and proven ability in analytical rigor, including being able to contextualize data and draw conclusions relevant to HSBC AM business context
- Knowledge and understanding of the Market - regulatory, political, competitor and economic environment
- Knowledge of Mandarin and English is preferred
